If you haven’t been to Magnuson Park lately to see Phase 3 construction progress, things are moving fast! Ponds have been shaped, snags have been “planted,” as have real plants, and the “centerline feature” now marks the centerline of the 400-foot-wide runway that once crossed the site.
Washington Park Arboretum Pacific Connections Garden, Seattle, WA
The first new exhibit of the Arboretum’s 20-year master plan, Pacific Connections Garden features plants from regions along the Pacific Rim with a focus on New Zealand, Cascadia and the most prominent part of the Chilean Garden. Working with the public, Seattle Parks, UWBG and the Arboretum Foundation, we designed infrastructure, selected plantings and relocated collections to create an immersive experience indicative of each region.

Overlake Village Stormwater and Park Facilities Planning, Redmond, WA
Planning, analysis and conceptual design of integrated stormwater, park facilities and greenways will soon transform this industrial area into a vibrant urban village. The plan promotes development by identifying and addressing long-term growth needs while restoring water quality and function of Kelsey Creek and affected watersheds. Co-located park facilities and stormwater vaults create public amenities over infrastructure while green streets manage stormwater and link pedestrians to open spaces and a light rail station.
Cal Anderson Park, Seattle, WA
The reimagining of this 11-acre Olmsted Park provides elegant pathways, open views and pedestrian gateways welcoming visitors to enjoy people-watching perches, oversized chess boards, children’s play area and expanses of lawn. Invisible to park users, a four-acre reservoir lies beneath the park’s iconic series of water features, developed in collaboration with artist Douglas Hollis. The park has been a catalyst and focal point for an increasingly vibrant community life in Seattle’s densest neighborhood.
Guy Michaelsen served as a Steering Committee Member for the 2011 AIA Honor Awards. Although finding jurors and planning the event took many weeks, the time spent this past weekend reviewing submittals and touring sites with the jury was the most energizing.

University of Puget Sound Commencement Walk, Tacoma, WA
Commencement Walk, previously a patchwork of pathways, unifies campus by providing a vibrant pedestrian spine linking the academic and residential cores while creating welcoming campus edges. The promenade is punctuated with small gathering spaces designed to foster interaction and larger spaces for events such as convocation and commencement celebrations. The pathway highlights several of the University’s historic buildings and cultural traditions, radically transforming campus, yet feels as if it’s always been there.
