Seattle AIA recently held its annual What Makes it Green awards. The awards began over a decade ago to recognize and learn from the best in sustainable design and promote the importance of sustainable building practices. This year there were 6 winners and 6 honorable mentions awarded for built and unbuilt projects. The Bullitt Center for Sustainable Design and Construction, a project for which we are honored to be involved, was one of the winners. The project, poised to be the world’s first commercial project to meet the Living Building Challenge™, is currently under construction in Seattle’s Capitol Hill Neighborhood. The six-story, 52,000 SF building will be used to promote the most innovative sustainable building technologies and practices, and serve as a regional headquarters for urban sustainability and education. Berger Partnership is tasked with integrating the landscape with the wastewater and stormwater system. We just completed schematic design of the adjacent McGilvra Place renovation project. McGilvra Place is registered and aims to become the first park in the world to achieve Living Building Challenge certification under the Landscape and Infrastructure typology.

Project Team: Bullitt Foundation, Point32, Schuchart, Miller|Hull Partnership, PAE Consulting Engineers, 2020 Engineering, Solar Design Associates, Berger Partnership, Springline, DCI Engineers, RDH Group, Haley and Aldrich, BRC Acoustics & Technology Consulting, Bush Roed & Hitchings.

Urban Intervention Design Competition
Our vision for Seattle Center’s next fifty years is a new era of innovation fostered by redeveloping open space and interconnecting social, economic, and ecological environments within our cities. Analytical concepts address constraints and unforeseeable conditions through an organic self-evolving process. Creating dense, connected, flexible fabric evokes dialect, linking local and global communities through strategies of flux, blur and incubate. Through the power of portability these tenets approach and transfer ideas, allowing individual urban cores to shape their own solutions.

Its official, the Magnuson Shore Ponds are now full and are looking REALLY cool. One of the cool features is our path that cuts through a very shallow “emergent shelf” that in time will all be emergent vegetation. If you’re wondering, the orange construction fencing will remain until plants leaf out in the spring to keep well intentioned visitors and dogs from trampling them!

We are very excited to announce that our internship report, Productive Neighborhoods: A case study based exploration of Seattle Urban Agriculture Projects, is complete and hot off the press. As designers we are eager to design spaces for urban agriculture but found that we lacked the understanding of how to integrate farming into projects in a way that would translate into a viable business model. With a better understanding of the current state of urban agriculture in Seattle, we can help integrate these concepts on projects.

Productive Neighborhoods

As designers, we understand the value of urban farming for its environmental and social benefits, but acknowledge the complexities of creating a successful commercial farm. This report explores existing urban farms in Seattle to better understand how urban farms function and the challenges they must overcome. The research seeks to share the knowledge of each case study and instigate a discussion about how to expand urban farming into Seattle’s food system as a reliable food source.
