RSS Feeds

August 12th, 2005

Did you know you can keep up with TBP news automatically by subscribing to our RSS feed? RSS feed readers, or news aggregators, provide a streamlined way to keep up with your favorite websites by presenting all new content from all sites, in one place, as each site is updated!

Have content delivered to you. Think of feed readers as your personal assistant that keeps a list of all your favorite sites, checks on them every day (or more like every hour), and not only lets you know when new content is available, but delivers the new content all in one page so you don’t have to visit each site. Feed readers will provide new content from any site that offers xml/rss feeds, such as the Seattle P-I, New York Times, the Dirt, Archinect, Land Online, and millions of other blog sites.

How to subscribe: First you need to pick a feed reader. There’s a huge array available, ranging from standalone applications to plug-ins for popular programs like Microsoft Outlook, Firefox and Safari.

Perhaps the easiest way to get started is to use a web-based reader. Web-based services offer the advantage of your feeds being available to you anywhere on any computer (like a hotmail email account). There are quite a few of these, an easy and efficient one to use is Bloglines.

Here are some links to more information on RSS feeds:

  • Wikipdia.org - describes RSS feeds and lists news readers.
  • The BBC - explains them in layman’s terms and offers RSS feed-reader links as well.
