Berger Staff “Transcend” at the Open Space Seattle 2100 Charrette

February 23rd, 2006

The goal of the charrette was to come up with a plan that could be used for the next 5-100 years. Teams looked at the city on two scales. First the teams were asked to envision what the city’s open space system would be like in 100 years. Second, teams worked on an individual study area within the city, such as Lake Union or Queen Anne.

The event was held at the South Lake Union Naval Reserve building, February 3-5 and was mostly sponsored by the University of Washington, City of Seattle and the Urban Land Institute. This two-day workshop was open to all members of the public including community leaders, members of the planning, design and development professions, environmental experts and neighborhood open space advocates. The Berger Partnership staff members, Rachael Watland, Jason Henry, Brent Chastain, Dave Knight, Guy Michaelsen, Karen Bech, Andy Mitton and Tom Berger, along with others, formed one of 23 teams.

The Berger Partnership team was awarded with “Best Transcendence of the Olmsted Plan.”

Strong Showing at NW Flower & Garden Show

February 23rd, 2006

In coordination with the Washington Park Arboretum, The Berger Partnership took home the Gold Medal for Design and the American Horticultural Society Environmental Award at the 2006 Northwest Flower & Garden Show, with a garden entitled “Woodland Path as Poetry of Landscape.” The show took place at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle, WA February 8-12, 2006. The show is created by Salmon Bay Events located in the Ballard neighborhood and also hosts the San Francisco Flower & Garden Show.

The garden was designed to parallel the journey of 1920’s Parisian artists who, following stressful world events, would elude the city and wander the countryside looking for inspiration and rejuvenation. This act of land transformation was called ‘de’ ambulation’ or the art of wandering. The garden features a dry stream bed using fiber optics and recylced tumbled glass, a handmade willow arbor created by Judy Zugish and Bill Roeder of Bouquet Banque Nursery and a wide variety of native plants. In addition, all the built elements of the garden are salvaged or recycled from a previous use and reminiscent of the Washington Park Arboretum environs.

Jan Satterthwaite led the design of the garden for The Berger Partnership, working alongside were Jason Henry and Thomas L. Berger. TBP staffers Andy Mitton, Dana Staikides and Anita Madtes were involved in set-up.
