CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS - Chehalis

December 6th, 2007

Architects Without Borders is calling for volunteers to do storm damage assessments in Chehalis.

A message from Rachel Minnery, AIA and Architects Without Borders:

ALL-
Due to the wind and water damage along the coast through to the mountains, AIA Washington is on alert for volunteers to perform damage assessments, provide professional assistance and possibly training. We have been asked to (at least) provide assistance in Chehalis.

Without further details at this time, I imagine a scenario something like this:

-deployed sometime shortly after the waters subside and access is available. This could be as early as tomorrow. We likely would be needed for the next 2 weeks or more.

-1 full day (or more) would be expected. If you can assist for two days or more, we likely could find accommodations for you.

-Teams of 2 architects (possibly interns), likely each pairing with staff from a local jurisdiction, depending on their availability

-Chehalis and Western Washington, perhaps Aberdeen and Grays Harbor (specific location TBD)

AIA Seattle would provide damage assessment forms. You would provide your own transportation and personal safety equipment/supplies.

Please email me with your availability and interest. Also note if (when) you’ve received ATC training, specific wind/water experience, or similar training/experience.

If you have questions you may email me at: rachelm@mithun.com

PRODUCT OF THE WEEK - Topo Table

December 4th, 2007

This week’s product of the week, Topo Table, was found on Transmaterialoff-site link and made by NONdesignsoff-site link. From Transmaterial:

TOPO is a series of Corian tables with built-in reconfigurable landscapes. Plastic inserts drop into the table to create functional topographies. TOPO uses rapid-prototyping technology in a way that enables each table to be different, and customers color in the areas where they want inserts placed in the finished product. These inserts sit in the holes and can be swapped out and rearranged. The little hills and valleys are made of plastic that is formed over real rocks. When not in use, these functional land forms invert to become sculptural mountains. According to designer Scott Franklin, ‘We spend a lot of time sitting at tables, so it’s nice to have some basil planted nearby.’”
