WWU Miller Hall Green Roof Demo

We just put out a green roof mock-up on Western Washington University’s campus showing the system that will be used for the Miller Hall Green Roof. The mock-up is angled to mimic the slope of the roof and allows university staff, faculty, and students to get up close to the edging and layers to better understand how it will function on the building. The roof will be installed this fall on a new pavilion structure within the courtyard of Miller Hall, which has been undergoing renovations since September.

Lynnwood High School Nominated for CEFPI Award

We are pleased to hear that Lynnwood High School is one of three finalists for CEFPI’s James D. MacConnell Award for 2010. One of its most prestigious awards, it was created in 1991 to honor the late Dr. MacConnell for his significant contributions to educational facility planning and the Council. Adams Rain Garden on New Day NW

Now completed, The Adams Elementary School Rain Garden in Ballard has become a treasure for the school and neighborhood. Principal, Guy Michaelsen talks more about the project with designer, David Minnery and grounds renovation organizer, Alison Krupnick on King 5’s New Day NW. Seattle’s Green Factor Wins ASLA 2010 Award

Seattle’s Green Factor was submitted to the 2010 ASLA Professional Awards by the City of Seattle Department of Planning and Development earlier this year. From the submittal, “Seattle Green Factor (SGF) is an innovative development standard designed to increase the quantity and quality of urban landscaping. Informed by European precedents, planners developed a scoring system to promote attractive and ecologically functional landscapes, including elements such as green roofs and walls, permeable paving, tree preservation, and food cultivation. Adopted by City of Seattle in 2006 and expanded in 2009, SGF is inspiring municipalities across the country to develop similar standards.”

Our firm has been involved in documenting the process and evaluating the program through development; our Functional Landscapes: Assessing Seattle’s Green Factor recently won a 2010 WASLA Merit Award. We are proud to see Seattle’s Green Factor win an Honor Award at the national level.

One official jury statement says, “It requires all projects to include a certain level of landscape design and has forced building owners to incorporate green walls, roofs, and permeable surfaces. It has had a positive impact on the profession in Seattle.”

Magnuson Park Wins 2010 WRPA Spotlight Award

The City of Seattle’s Magnuson Park received a 2010 WRPA Spotlight Facility and Parks Award for Best Park Design. Winners were announced last Thursday, April 15 during their annual trade show and conference.

The Berger Partnership’s design team was led by Guy Michaelsen, “We wanted to mesh the natural and the cultural aspects of the site, weaving organic fingers of natural wetlands into the fields and taking the geometry of the fields into the wetlands. We hope people will come for sports and enjoy the surprise of the wetlands and to make naturalists out of people who had no clue they were interested in nature.”

TBP Honored with Four WASLA Awards

The 2010 WASLA Awards were a good one for The Berger Partnership. We were honored with four awards: Pierce County Maintenance Facility received a Special Mention for General Design, East Redmond Corridor received a Merit Award for Planning and Analysis, and Functional Landscapes – Assessing Elements of Seattle’s Green Factor received a Merit Award for Research and Communication and the Peoples’ Choice Award. The Berger Partnership Joins the Cascadia Center Design Team

We are excited to announce that The Berger Partnership will be working with the Bullitt Foundation on the new 6-story Cascadia Center for Sustainable Design and Construction on Capitol Hill. The project will be the first of its kind, aspiring to meet the Living Building Challenge , developed by the Green Building Council in 2006. “Our role is to work with the design team to integrate the landscape with the wastewater and stormwater systems; but most importantly, our job is to connect the project to the public, both neighbors and passersby,” says Rachael Meyer.
