Lake Boren Park
Newcastle, WA
The Lake Boren Park Master Plan sought to enhance the park’s connection to the surrounding community. A key addition was a trail uniting the park’s west and east sides, crossing Boren Creek and the adjacent wetlands. After studying several alignments, the selected route completes a gap in the Crosstown Trail. This new segment includes sections of paved trail, bridges, and an elevated walkway offering a unique experience of the lake and creek. Midway along the elevated walkway, an overwater perch with a bird blind shelter provides panoramic views across the lake. Ecological improvements include habitat creation, replanting sensitive areas, and the addition of bird houses, fostering a richer environment for both wildlife and visitors alike.

A collaboration with the Muckleshoot Tribe led to the design of the boardwalk’s stream crossing over Boren Creek, a salmon-bearing stream. The structure spans the creek, its floodplain, and adjacent wetlands, avoiding direct impacts while enhancing ecological function.
