National Nordic Museum Courtyard

Seattle, WA

The National Nordic Museum asked us to reimagine their interior courtyard, transforming what had been a simple lawn into a flexible outdoor space for events and casual afternoons, embedding their historic sauna building and Nordic ship.

Planting was refreshed with a resilient palette, balancing a Nordic look and feel with Pacific Northwest natives that perform well in the urban environment. The result is a meadow-like character that softens the courtyard and creates lushness around the sauna.

A new fencing scheme screens noise and views from Market Street, serving as both a functional buffer and a thematic backdrop that connects to the museum’s ships. Crafted to patina over time, the fence presents a friendly face to neighbors and enriches the courtyard experience.

Scandinavian furnishings in bold colors further strengthen the cultural identity of the space while adding vibrancy and flexibility for seasonal events. Accessed through the museum, the courtyard now serves as an adaptable and useful extension of the institution.
