For more than two decades, we have partnered with the same clients on this steep Queen Anne site, adapting the landscape as the family’s needs have evolved.

What was once a composition of woody plantings and a layered canopy of Japanese maples – a small urban forest edge – has grown into a more textural, seasonally dynamic landscape. The new planting palette introduces softness and variety through perennials and grasses such as Japanese forest grass, variegated autumn moor grass, oxalis, wild ginger, sedum ‘Angelina’, lady’s mantle, astilbe, hardy geranium, and Japanese anemone, interwoven with climbing and panicle hydrangeas that add height and depth throughout the seasons.

On this steep site, much of the slope stabilization and planting remains from the original design but the area where the slope is level, a modest upper garden, has been reimagined. New hardscape defines paths, edges and introduces volumes; carefully detailed and sandblasted to blend seamlessly within the existing home’s concrete, creating a framework for the new garden.

The visual interest and sense of discovery the layers and paths create actually makes the compact garden feel larger, while adding scale to the outdoor living areas.

In the original phase, a circular lawn defined the upper garden; a welcoming, kid-friendly space that suited family life at the time. Now, with grown children and changing priorities, the lawn has given way to outdoor living: terraces, seating, and dining that expand how the family uses their home.
