Mercer Island Public Safety and Maintenance Buildings
Mercer Island, WA
The Mercer Island Public Works project is designed to replace aging facilities that no longer support modern operations, the project delivers not just new buildings and a high-performance service yard, it introduces an inspiring campus designed to enhance productivity, connection, and pride in public service. The City of Mercer Island sits at the heart of Lake Washington, 6.4 square miles of iconic Pacific Northwest beauty and home to more than 25,000 residents. Every day, city staff power the essential services that keep Mercer Island thriving, from public works and public safety to parks, recreation, and community programs. But at this moment, city staff find themselves striving to maintain services in buildings and sites that no longer support their work.
This extraordinary 12-acre site is more than a place to work, it is a treasured green space with a meandering creek, mature forest, and thriving native habitat – a unique, natural backdrop for a municipal campus. The project embraces this opportunity, creating immersive outdoor experiences that bring staff closer to nature every day. Walking trails, a basketball court, and inviting outdoor gathering spaces encourage employees to recharge, collaborate, and connect.
Sustainability is at the core of the project’s vision. Leveraging the Pacific Northwest’s rainfall as a strategic resource, the design features a 120,000 square foot roof that captures stormwater and stores it in onsite cisterns. This harvested rainwater becomes a working asset for Public Works operations, such as wheelwash systems, reducing potable water use and reinforcing Mercer Island’s commitment to environmental leadership.
By blending forward-thinking infrastructure with the island’s natural beauty, the Mercer Island Public Works Project sets a new standard for civic facilities; one that supports staff, protects the environment, and reflects the community’s values.
