Capitol Hill Residence

Capitol Hill Residence

Seattle, WA

A historic 1910 Tudor mansion was carefully reimagined to support the rhythms of a young family while honoring the character of its neighborhood. The client recently completed contemporary renovations to the interior of home, and we were engaged to extend that dialogue into design of the site.

The design embraces contrast: clean-lined metal and stone elements are set within a lush, defined  garden that feels rooted in place. Painted black metal and crisp ground planes nod to the modern additions, while stone terraces, hedges, and layered planting connect back to the historic context of the home’s design. The planting palette provides evergreen structure with soft seasonal interest. Rooms within the garden are deliberately formed, including quiet seating groves, a bocce court, dining terrace, play lawn, and even a mini orchard, allowing the family to occupy the landscape in varied ways throughout the seasons.

Working closely with the clients, the design introduces whimsy and livability into the garden’s structure. The metal gate includes a sliding portal for children to peek through, and seating areas intentionally mirror the family’s configuration; two full-sized chairs alongside three small ones, for example. These moments reflect the project’s spirit: refined but not precious, contemporary but not austere.
